ANIMALS will be the first beneficiaries of the 25th anniversary showing of the film Footrot Flats: The Dog’s Tale next week.
A special screening will be held on August 31 with $10 from each ticket going towards Wellington SPCA.
Pat Cox and John Barnett, the original producers, approached the SPCA with the idea of screening the digitally remastered film prior to its public release the next day.
“The film originally premiered at the Embassy in 1986, and I just love the symbiotic relationship that has developed of showing it there again and donating the proceeds to the SPCA,” said Mr Cox.
SPCA spokesperson Joanna McLeod says they are grateful the producers thought of them, and the staff are excited about it.
The SPCA does not receive any funding from the Government, so they rely on donations and charity such as this event.
“There’s some songs that have been part of our culture for 25 years now, so it will be interesting to see them on the big screen again,” says Ms McLeod.
She says there has been a lot of renewed interest in the film, especially with the release of the Billy T James movie, as he voiced a character in the film.
“It’s all part of New Zealand’s comic legacy.”
Mr Cox says he has a connection with Wellington and the SPCA.
“My children had pets from the SPCA, and with the animals in the film, especially the Dog and Jess, it’s just a lovely connection.”
The charity screening is at 6:30 pm on Wednesday August 31, and the film will continue at the Embassy for the following fortnight. Tickets for the charity show are available at the Embassy or online from its website.
